BMW HP2 Sport High Performance with 2D GP dashboard

BMW HP2 Sport

The engine of the new HP2 Sport is truly a masterpiece of engineering.
The raw numbers are enough to leave you in no doubt – this is a
power unit that is built with absolute performance in mind. It develops
133 horsepower (98 kW) at 8,750 rpm, and while its maximum torque
of 115 Nm is produced at 6,000 rpm, the boxer engine will rev all the
way up to 9,500 rpm. The HP2 Sport also features all-new cylinder
heads, with cam follower valve lifts attached to double overhead

BMW HP2 Sport engineCamshafts on each cylinder. There are four radial valves on each
cylinder, with valve plate diameters of 39 millimetres at the inflow
and 33 millimetres at the outflow. Other modifications such as
airflow-optimized intake and exhaust ports, new forged pistons
and redesigned connecting rods also contribute to the outstanding
performance. Two oil coolers, running in parallel one behind the
other, prevent the engine from overheating.

HP stands for High Performance. The HP2 Sport is a pure sportsbike,
and everything about it serves that end. Weight is reduced to an
absolute minimum, and radical design innovations abound. There
are a wealth of exclusive components, such as the adjustable Magura
master cylinders, adjustable milled foot pegs, and billet aluminium
top yokes, all designed and manufactured to the very highest quality
standards.

The bike also draws on BMW Motorrad’s extensive experience of
endurance racing. Everything from the gear shift assist to the carbon
fibre panels and 2D GP dashboard is designed solely with perform-
ance in mind. Riders will also love the Öhlins sport suspension, which
is adjustable for height and rebound/compression damping, and the
radially bolted Brembo monobloc brake system. BMW Motorrad ABS
is available as an option – for track use, this can be deactivated

The HP2 Sport represents the absolute pinnacle of boxer engine design. The BMW Motorrad designers have poured all their love of brilliant engineering and passion for detail into creating a thorough- bred sportsbike of the highest class.

As a genuine High Performance machine, there are no compromises in the HP2 Sport. Every detail right down to the last screw contributes to the handling and riding dynamics, so riders can push their abilities to the absolute limit. Thanks to components such as the carbon front fairing, self-supporting carbon tail section, and forged alloy wheels, the dry weight is an unbelievably light 178 kilograms. Combine this with the incredible engine and outstanding chassis, and you have a machine that is the sports rider’s dream.

430 Participants from 51 Different Countries Ready for 2011 Dakar Rally

For the third year in a row the Dakar will remain in South America. The two week contest covering more than 9000km starting from the Argentine capital crossing the Andes into Chile, the longest country in the world, through the Atacama desert and traversing a wide range of topography and climates. Over 180 bikes and 30 quads fill an entry list that sees more than 430 participants from 51 different countries set to attempt the distance. The competitors have already sailed from Le Harve to Argentina and will undergo technical control on the last two days of the year.

The 33rd Dakar Rally draws ever closer and the 2011 edition of the historic and daunting event will begin in Buenos Aires on new year’s day with Yamaha hopeful of further good results in the motorcycling category thanks to the excellent support of Yamaha Motor France and their potent Team Yamaha Racing France Ipone.

In Team Yamaha Racing France Ipone colours will be recent Rally of Morocco runner-up Helder Rodrigues, Spaniard Jordi Viladoms, France’s Olivier Pain and David Barrot filling an important supporting role. Hopes are high for Portugal’s Rodrigues who was 4th overall in the rally in 2010 and in currently in decent form on the adapted Yamaha WR450F. 31 year old Rodrigues – 2010 European Enduro Champion no less - was 5th in the ’09 Dakar and breached the top four ten months ago so is now optimistic of reaching the final podium in one of the toughest rallies in the world. To add to his pedigree the rider has not finished off the podium in the four major international events he has contested in 2010. The motorcycle class boasts a full entry with 200 competitors and will use new regulations for the first time limiting all bike sizes to 450cc. This will suit the WR that won the previous 450cc section of the Bikes division in 2004, 2005 and 2007.

Viladoms is also buoyant for January 1st and the 30 year old has a best result of 7th at Dakar as well as being a stage winner. “We have a great bike for the Dakar,” he recently posted on his Twitter account. “We made a two day test in Morocco recently for the engine and suspension and every time we rode the bike felt better; the team are really motivated!”
Pain is one of France’s top Enduro riders and finished 9th at last year’s Dakar meaning that the French team have three top ten racers in their ranks and enter the meeting as one of the strongest crews on the starting list.
Yamaha have a fantastic record in the rally with nine overall victories stretching back from 1979 and six successes thanks to Dakar ‘legend’ Stephan Peterhansel. Frenchman David Frétigné’s first effort in 2004 saw the introduction of the famous ‘2-Trac’ mono WR450F and he won three stages against the might of the twin cylinders. Yamaha now stand an excellent chance of further distinction on this highest of levels for Rally. 4.1 million spectators took to the countryside to watch the 2010 edition and with the Dakar now embedded in South America the following is increasing.

“We have worked with and developed the WR450F in rallies since 2004,” explained Alexandre Kowalski, Marketing Director of Yamaha Motor France. “We have a lot of faith in the light chassis and the reliability of the four-stroke 450cc WR motor which deals aptly with the long and difficult races.”
Yamaha also will also have a strong presence in the Quad category with the Argentine Patronelli brothers, Marcos and Alejandro, having dominated the competition in 2010 on their Yamaha Raptors. This time the formidable family partnership will count on increased technical back-up from Yamaha Motor Argentina and are clear on their goals. “The support from Yamaha during the rally means we can be more relaxed and organised for the race in 2011,” said last year’s winner and recent Rally of Pharaons victor Marcos, “we can use the stops for more rest and recuperation and these are two fundamental aspects for the Dakar. The Raptor is a powerful and reliable vehicle so we are optimistic.”

Of the 13 entered females in the 2011 race one will be Yamaha Quad pilot Camelia Liparoti. The former Quad Cross country World Champion will be blogging the experiences of her second Dakar and her endeavours can be seen on www.facebook.com/yamaharacingcom. Helder Rodrigues will also be providing updates online.

Concerning the route itself perhaps the hardest part will be the second half in which the intensity of the schedule and distances increase after the rest day on January 8th. In fact the longest Special takes place on the 9th with a mammoth 631km to be covered in the fastest way possible. The latter section of the rally also means the drop down through Chile and the dune and desert landscape more familiar with the veterans of the African Dakar. The Atacama is said to be one of the driest deserts in the world but generally the layout will involve a wide variety of terrain with the routing touching the borders of several countries including Bolivia and Peru; a truly encompassing voyage.

Yamaha YZF-R1 2011 MotoGP-inspired Engine

Yamaha YZF-R1Back for 2011, the YZF-R1 is the only production motorcycle with a crossplane crankshaft. Crossplane technology, first pioneered in MotoGP® racing with the M1, puts each piston 90° from the next, with an uneven firing interval of 270°- 180°- 90°- 180°. This uneven order does an amazing thing… it actually lets power build more smoothly. That means smooth roll-on delivery out of the corners, with outstanding tractability, followed by very strong high rpm power. It’s a feeling that’s simply unmatched, like having two engines in one: the low-rpm torquey feel of a twin with the raw, high-rpm power of an inline four. This breakthrough technology on the YZF-R1 represents a paradigm shift in both technology and performance.
This R1 keeps all the technological superiorities developed for its predecessor: YCC-TTM (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) is MotoGP® inspired fly-by-wire technology used to deliver instant throttle response. YCC-I® is Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake which is a variable intake system that broadens the spread of power. The fuel injection system provides optimum air/fuel mixtures for maximum power and smooth throttle response.
The R1 features Yamaha D-MODE (or drive mode) with rider-selectable throttle control maps to program YCC-T performance characteristics for riding conditions. The standard map is designed for optimum overall performance. The “A” mode lets the rider enjoy sportier engine response in the low- to mid-speed range, and the “B” mode offers response that is somewhat less sharp for riding situations that require especially sensitive throttle operation. Switching maps is as easy as pushing a button on the handlebar switch.
In keeping with this machine’s exceptional cornering ability and crisp handling, the aluminum frame has been designed to offer exceptional rigidity balance. The rear frame is lightweight Controlled-Fill die-cast magnesium, contributing the optimum mass centralization. Suspension includes SOQI front forks which use one of the tricks developed for our winning MotoGP® bikes: independent damping. The left fork handles compression damping and the right side handles the rebound damping. And the rear shock adopts bottom linkage for optimum suspension characteristics.
The bodywork does more than add break-away-from-the-crowd styling with its more serious, less busy look. The side fairing is smooth for a sleek appearance. And, instead of the usual four-bulb headlight design, the R1 has only two projector-type bulbs mounted closer to the nose of the bike. This positions ram air ducts closer in for a more compact, smooth look. In addition, the rounded lenses are unique to the supersport industry.

YZF-R1 2011Crossplane crankshaft technology proven in victory after victory on MotoGP® machines provides a high-tech uneven firing interval. Unlike typical inline-four engine design, where the two outer and two inner pistons move together in pairs with 180° intervals, the crossplane crankshaft has each connecting rod 90° with a unique firing order of 270° – 180° – 90° – 180°. This overcomes the inherent fluctuations in inertial torque during each engine revolution, and the accompanying peaky torque characteristics. Instead, combustion torque continues to build, giving the rider more linear throttle response with awesome power and traction out of the corners.
To maximize rider comfort as well as power output, the engine adopts a coupling-type balancer that rotates in the opposite direction as the crankshaft.
This engine features forged aluminum pistons to take maximum advantage of the power characteristics. Titanium intake valves are lightweight.
A forced-air intake system is adopted to increase intake efficiency by using the natural airflow during riding to pressurize the air in the air box. This contributes to outstanding power delivery characteristics in the high-speed range, while the design also helps to minimize intake noise.
Slipper-type back torque-limiting clutch greatly facilitates braking/downshifting from high speed.
The exhaust system is meticulously designed to enhance engine output while, thanks to its three-way catalyst technology, also reducing exhaust emissions. The silencer is a single expansion type, and the sound coming through from the unique crossplane crankshaft-equipped engine is unlike any other inline-four cylinder production supersport.
This fuel-injected engine takes full advantage of YCC-T (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle), the MotoGP®-inspired fly-by-wire technology used to deliver instant throttle response. There’s also YCC-I, Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake, the variable intake system that broadens the spread of power. Fuel injectors have 12 holes for optimum fuel atomization that translates to the most power from every fuel charge.
Have it your way, thanks to Yamaha D-MODE (or “Drive Mode”) variable throttle control. There are three modes that control how YCC-T responds to throttle input from the rider. The selectable “A” mode puts more emphasis on engine response in low to midrange rpm. “B” mode, on the other hand, provides less sharp response to input for riding situations that require especially sensitive throttle operation. The standard map is designed for optimum overall performance. Selecting the map you want is as easy as pressing a button on the handlebars.

YZF-R1 speed

The frame has a combination of uncompromising rigidity where needed along with carefully achieved flex for the precise rigidity balance this bike needs to give the rider the full benefit of its handling and engine characteristics. It is a sophisticated combination of Controlled-Fill die-cast, stamping, and gravity casting… the exact technology needed for each portion of this advanced frame.
SOQI front forks take a page from the championship-winning design of our MotoGP® weapon, the M1. Since both forks always move together, compression damping duties can be confined to the left fork, while rebound damping is precisely handled by the right fork, reducing oil cavitation.
The SOQI rear shock features both high and low speed compression damping plus an easy-to-use screw hydraulic adjustment for preload. This unit also adopts a pillow-ball-type joint for exceptional shock absorption, road hold feeling, and damper response. To achieve maximum performance, a bottom linkage is used to work with the rest of the chassis refinements for brilliant, crisp handling characteristics.
Factory racers get machines tailored to their preferences. Welcome to the club. R1 has adjustable footrests, with a 15mm height and 3mm front-to-rear adjustment.
The press-formed fuel tank has a shape developed using 3-D simulation analysis technology. The elongated shape of the tank allows it to fit neatly within the frame in a way that promotes concentration of mass.

YZ 450F 4-stroke Liquid Cooled Motocross

Yamaha YZ 450F The YZ450F features a revolutionary fuel injected, liquid-cooled, 4-stroke, 4-valve, DOHC, rearward-slanting single cylinder engine and an advanced Bilateral Beam aluminium frame with components distributed for a perfect mass-centralisation and class-leading handling.

Unique engine design features a rearward slanting cylinder that is "reversed" compared to traditional designs. The FI throttle body and air box are front mounted while the exhaust exits from the rear of the cylinder. This design is used to centralize mass for excellent handling and a light feel. The other major benefit is the straight shot intake system which maximizes power output. The engine is slanted 7.5 degrees rearward.
The "reversed" design allows for a straight intake path into the cylinder, providing maximum intake flow and efficiency for excellent power. The front positioned intake means that engine heat will have less "heating effect" on the incoming fuel charge (cooler fuel helps increase power).
Centrally located spark plug and the 4-valve head promotes a "tumbling effect" of the inboundYamaha YZ 450F Red fuel / air for better combustion, improved throttle response and power output.
Compact, 4-valve cylinder head design, features a 12.5:1 compression ratio. The intake valves are 36mm in diameter and the exhaust valves are 30mm.
Lightweight titanium valves (intake & exhaust) and load-reduced oval valve springs reduce reciprocating mass for less friction, faster-revving and smoother-hitting power delivery across the rev range.
Automatic cam chain tensioner reduces maintenance and cam chain "sliders" reduce internal frictional losses.
High performance, light weight hollow intake and exhaust camshafts.
The lightweight aluminium cylinder features a ceramic composite coating which is applied directly to the aluminium, eliminating the need for a heavy iron sleeve or liner. The ceramic coating insures faster, more uniform heat dissipation, reduced friction and a longer service life.
The cylinder is "offset" relative to the crankshaft to reduce frictional losses between the piston and the cylinder wall during the power stroke. This offset design is a first on a Yamaha motocross machine.
Crankcase design utilizes an integrated oil tank inside the cases to supply oil to the dry sump lubrication system. This design concentrates mass lower in the frame for optimum handling and lighter weight feeling. There are no exterior oil lines with this design and the internal oil tank is designed to promote air - oil separation.
Special cylinder design features cutaways that allow the air "trapped" under the piston to enter a side chamber (or cutaway) to reduce horsepower-robbing "pumping losses."
The crankcase also utilizes cutaways to reduce "pumping losses". The crankcase cutaways match the cutaways in the cylinder for maximum efficiency.
Lightweight , short-skirt, forged piston provides excellent reliability, less mechanical vibration and reduced weight.
Yamaha YZ 450F Engine Piston oil cooler utilizes a pinpoint nozzle that directs oil to the desired portion of the cylinder and underside of the piston, which reduces piston, cylinder and rod temperatures for great durability.
Oil volume in the engine has been optimized to reduce weight and oil drag related power losses.
Lightweight gear driven balancer shaft reduces vibration for improved rider comfort and less rider fatigue.
The crankcase features a tri-axis layout for the crank, main and drive axles. This tri-axis design keeps the crankcase more compact while also centralizing mass for excellent handling. All of the shafts are positioned low in the cases to maintain a low centre of gravity.
5-speed transmission features "involute splines" on the transmission axles to ensure smooth shifting and instant hook-up under power. The multi-plate wet clutch features a revised clutch lever actuating arm (engine side) to reduce excess free play as the clutch heats up during a moto.
5-speed transmission optimizes engine performance. This 5-speed transmission provides great performance and makes the YZ450F very versatile for MX, Hare Scrambles, Super Moto, Ice Racing and Enduro type applications.
Quick-access, lightweight magnesium outer clutch cover for fast, easy clutch maintenance.
Keihin 44mm throttle body fuel injection system is a battery-less design for reduced weight and is designed specifically for MX applications. The 12-hole injector maximizes fuel atomization for more complete combustion and great power output. The benefits of fuel injection include constant ongoing adjustments to insure the optimum fuel - air ratio regardless of outside air temperature and altitude. Other benefits include improved starting and improved throttle response. The system is equipped a throttle position sensor (TPS), plus a range of sensors (engine temp, outside air temp and air pressure etc.). There is also a cold start and fast idle knob which doubles as an idle adjuster too.
The injector spray pattern, spray direction and the distance to the intake valves have been optimized, while the specially designed straight intake tract helps to maximize the benefits of the FI system and overall power output.
Optional, compact, hand held "YZ Power Tuner" allows tailoring of both fuel injection settings and ignition mapping. Nine (9) different setting points can be accessed for both the FI and ignition maps. Maps can be stored and shared with other Power Tuners if desired. The days of removing a carb to make jetting changes are gone.
Compact, lightweight in-tank electric fuel pump
Larger capacity ACM (alternating current magneto) is used to eliminate the need for a battery.
Automatic decompression system ensures easy starts in any gear with no manual lever to fuss with.
Air box (located behind the steering head) features a straight shot intake boot and a washable, dual-stage, foam air filter.
"Tornado" design exhaust system exits from the "rear" of the cylinder. The spiral winding of the header pipe provides the correct "tuned" length and takes full advantage of the exhaust "pulse" effect to maximize cylinder filling. There is a "resonator" (or power chamber) built into the header pipe. Another benefit of this exhaust system is mass centralization
Re-packable lightweight aluminium / stainless steel muffler has been designed to optimize the performance of the engine. Muffler disassembly is easy since the silencer bolts together with allen screws.
Compact, lightweight, single core, dual radiators provide outstanding cooling efficiency.
High powered ECU controls the ignition and fuel injection processes. There is also a "G" sensor system that will shut down the fuel injection system if the bike lies on its side for more than 10 seconds. There is no special procedure to re-start the bike … just kick it and go.
Works-style race-spec "barrel adjuster" for on-the-fly clutch adjustability.
Easy access oil filter.

Compact "bilateral beam" aluminium frame centralizes mass for exceptional handling. This 450cc class specifically designed frame consists of a "High Solid Die Cast" head pipe, hydro formed main rails plus various forged and extruded components. This frame is compact and offers significantly improved "rider - machine communication" (a.k.a. feedback). The engineers have optimized the balance between strength, rigidity and flex. The key goal of the chassis is faster and easier cornering … one of the keys to winning races. The engineers started with a clean sheet of paper and designed the chassis based on the requirements of a 450cc motocrosser. Note: the YZ450F frame is unique, it is not the same as the YZ250F frame.
The rigidity balance of the frame has been optimized and features high lateral and torsional rigidity with "tuned flex" in the longitudinal direction. The result is a feeling of lightness, agility and traction.
Lightweight, tapered, aluminium swingarm is produced using "hydro forming", a special method that uses high pressure liquid to form shapes. The shock is positioned in-line with the central axis of the bike. The swingarm pivot shaft is now 17mm.
Lightweight removable rear sub frame is constructed of square-section, lightweight aluminium pipe. The detachable design allows easy access when servicing rear suspension components.
Cast aluminium upper and forged aluminium lower triple clamps. Fork off set is 22mm.
Adjustaable handlebars offer a total of 4 different handlebar positions available (thanks partly to the offset design of the aluminium handlebar clamps) with an adjustment range of 30mm, to suit a wide variety of riders.
Pro Taper bars provide excellent strength and durability. Foam handlebar pad is included.
48mm, adjustable, inverted, Kayaba cartridge forks with 310mm (12.2") of wheel travel. These forks feature a twin-chamber design which means the damper unit is in a separate structure which prevents aerated fork oil from entering the inner damper assembly and reducing its damping abilities. Since the inner damper is pressurized, it also eliminates bubbles forming in the oil. Front fork adjustments include: 20-way compression damping and 20-way rebound damping. Optional fork springs are available through Genuine Yamaha parts.
The balance between the inner and outer tubes is optimized, while the Kashima coating on the pressure tank and the piston rod reduce friction for smoother suspension performance. The cylinder diameter is 24mm for excellent primary cushioning.
The 48mm inverted KYB fork also features a Transfer Control Valve (TCV). The TCV enhances the damping force from mid to full stroke and improves bottoming characteristics. The benefit of TCV is more precise control throughout the full suspension stroke. The TCV is located on the upside of the spring and its function is controlled by piston speed, not piston position … hence the term "Speed Sensitive fork".
"Kashima coating" has been applied to the fork tubes to reduce friction for smoother suspension performance.
Large "wrap-around" plastic fork protectors provide excellent lower fork tube protection. The "self-supporting" design reduces friction for smoother fork operation.
Monocross link rear suspension system features a fully adjustable Kayaba, piggyback shock which provides 315mm (12.4") of wheel travel and features separate adjusters for high- and low-speed compression damping. The shock is now in-line with the center axis of the bike for excellent control. Adjustments include: spring preload, 30-way rebound damping, 20-way low-speed compression damping and 2 turns of high speed compression damping.
The shock uses an 18mm diameter piston rod. Kashima coating is used in the shock body and sub tank to reduce friction and improve suspension performance during a long moto. The Kayaba shock utilizes a full rebound oil lock system for excellent suspension function and great ride quality. The shock spring location is 30mm lower than last year, reducing the centre of gravity.
250mm floating front wave-style disc reduces weight, improves cooling and adds style too. The disc is squeezed by a Nissin twin piston caliper fitted with lightweight aluminium pistons.
"Shorty style" adjustable front brake lever can be adjusted to fit various hand sizes.
Adjustable clutch lever can be adjusted to fit various hand sizes.
245mm rear disc brake features a "wave-type" disc. The rear disc is squeezed by a single Nissin piston caliper.
Lightweight, compact, integrated Nissin rear master cylinder (fluid reservoir is integrated into the top of the master cylinder) provides strong stopping power with excellent feel and control.
The rear caliper and the lower portion of the wave disc are protected by heavy duty plastic protectors.
Compact body work includes front number plate, front fender, rad shrouds, fuel tank, side panels and rear fender which enhance the lightweight feel and look of the YZ450F. This "minimal design" bodywork is a flat design, allowing for fast, easy rider movements. The ergonomics provide a natural and roomy riding position. The body has been designed to maintain it good looks throughout the life of the machine.
Revised. lightweight, plastic resin 6.2 litre fuel tank is located mostly under the seat, once again reducing the centre of gravity and centralizes mass for exceptional handling performance.
Lightweight Sun Star rear sprocket.
Lightweight, 21" front and 19" rear Excel rims provide exceptional durability and help reduce unsprung weight for optimal suspension performance and handling.
Large 25mm rear axle and a hub design which features a second bearing on the sprocket side for increased rigidity.

Polypropylene engine and water pump guards reduce weight.
Lightweight, extra wide foot pegs provide excellent grip and ground clearance.
Folding shift lever tip helps prevent damage.
Stainless steel, inner clutch cable provides excellent strength and long life.
Lightweight chain guide / support helps reduce chance of chain derailment. Also helps protect rear sprocket damage too.
Heavy duty rubber swingarm protector
Heavy duty DID 520 drive chain
Convenient oil level sight glass
